Active Directory, Domain Controller and Restore(s)
  • Description

Both Replay 4 and AppAssure 5 perform image level backups by first taking a full snapshot before copying the incremental snapshot thereafter. Keep in mind that due to the limitations of VSS, backups of the database will be in a crash-consistent state.  With this type of backup you would need to perform one of the following restores

    • Non-authoritative restore of Active Directory (AD)
    • Non-authoritative restore of SYSVOL,
    • Authoritative restore of Active Directory
    • Authoritative restore of SYSVOL
    • You can also perform an AD database restore

This backup typically works on most applications, however in certain instances you will need to perform a “manual recovery.”

  • Resolution

    AD recovery scenarios

    1. DC is lost, other DCs are available
    2. All DCs are lost (or there was only one)
    3. AD database is corrupted and AD service doesn’t start
    4. Certain information is accidentally deleted from the AD

The following sections describe the steps necessary to perform restores in the aforementioned scenarios.

    Scenario 1

    1. Restore the DC from the backup by performing a bare metal restore (BMR). For more information on BMRs, click here.
    2. Reboot the DC. Ensure the AD service has started successfully.

Note that no other steps are required, as replication of AD records will perform automatically.

    Scenario 2

    1. Ensure the newest available backup is used for restore.
      1. NOTE: If your domain only contains one DC, you should back up data at least daily.
    2. Restore the DC from the backup by performing a BMR. For more information on BMRs, click here.
    3. Reboot the computer. Ensure the AD service has started successfully.

    Scenarios 3 and 4

    1. Ensure the newest available backup is used for restore.
    2. Reboot the DC into Director Services Restore mode.
    3. Create a copy of your AD database files.
    4. Restore the files from the backup (use file level restore from an image-level backup to accomplish this).
